Vegetable Planting Guide |

The Vegetable Planting Guide is recommended for use as a general guideline for determining seeding rates, dates, and depths; row and plant spacing; and other useful information for selected vegetable crops on the prairies.
Follow these easy steps:
- Locate the average last spring, and first fall frost dates for your area of the Prairies contained in the two maps and consult the frost free listings under your town or city.
- Look up the alphabetical listing of your chosen vegetable.
- Follow the recommendations when planning, purchasing seeds or plants, and planting your vegetable garden.
Every spring is different, bringing its own surprises - work on the conservative side and allow for Mother Nature's tricks. If the weather is sour don't push it, and if spring seems early don't rush it. Pay attention to the micro-climatic factors that may influence your garden (slope of the land, drainage, fences, buildings, etc). Practical experience and good record keeping will minimize your risks in the long run.
The Vegetable Planting Guide was originally based on material contained in the Vegetable Lesson of the University of Alberta, Home Gardening Course, and its use is provided courtesy of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Extension. It has been updated for Gardenersweb by the original author, Thom J. Shaw.
